Geographical databases

GEOGRAPHICAL DATABASES - 7.5 ECTS

The main part in geographical analyses and visualisation is the data. In this course you will learn about techniques to efficiently store and retrieve data. The main focus is on theoretical and practical concepts of geographical databases including design, implementation and usage of geographical databases. It describes the workflow to create a geographical database starting with defining user requirements, then creating an information model (in UML), and finally create a database schema and populate the database with data. That is, this course all the necessary steps from defining the user needs of a geographical database to the final database.

The first part of the course concentrates on general database knowledge, while the latter part has a focus on spatial techniques and applications. E.g. in the first part you will learn about how to use Structured Query Language (SQL) for defining and retrieving data in a database, while the latter part concentrates on extensions to SQL for handling geographic data.  Other topics treated are e.g. spatial indexation techniques used for fast retrieval of data.

The course ends with a project where you will create all the steps from defining user requirements to a ready to use geographical database.
