The Lund University GIS Centre is located under the Department of Physical Geography and Ecosystem Sciences at Lund University. According to the QS World University Rankings by subject 2013 the field of geography to which the department belongs is ranked 26th in the world. The department has a long history in environment related research and education, including land degradation and desertification, natural resource management, climate change, green house gases and carbon cycle, ecosystems modelling and global change. The GIS Centre has a good international reputation regarding education and research in geospatial analysis integrating biophysical and socio-economic systems and linking these to global systems. Since 2003, the GIS Centre has been running an Internet based Masters’ program in GIS called LUMA-GIS that was one of the first distance learning programs in Europe to receive excellence accreditation from the European Association of Distance Teaching Universities in 2009.
